October is a season full of excitement—from costumes and trick-or-treating to pumpkin patches and school parties! While Halloween candy is a highlight of the celebration, following a few simple habits can help ensure your child enjoys the festivities while keeping their smile healthy and bright.
Halloween is full of fun, but all those sugary treats can be tough on little teeth! To keep those smiles healthy, try to limit very sticky stuff like gummies, taffy, and caramels since they love to stick to teeth and cause cavities. Hard candies also pose a risk to teeth and dental work. It’s a great idea to help your kiddos enjoy their treats in moderation and stick to softer, quick-dissolving snacks whenever possible.
If your child has dental crowns, spacers, orthodontic brackets, or permanent dental appliances, Halloween is a good time to be especially cautious with sticky or hard candy. These treats can loosen crowns or spacers, damage brackets, or become stuck around appliances.
Avoid sticky, chewy, and very hard candies whenever possible, and remind children not to bite down on hard candy. If an appliance becomes loose or damaged, contact our office so we can determine if it needs attention.
Water helps rinse away food particles and keeps your child's mouth hydrated. Encourage water after enjoying Halloween treats.
Continue brushing twice a day and flossing daily. Most importantly, make sure your child brushes before bedtime—especially after enjoying Halloween treats.
Regular dental checkups help keep your child's smile healthy and allow us to catch potential concerns early. If your child is due for a visit, October is a great time to schedule!
